Genres: Crime, mystery, thriller. The story must contain a scarf and the scarf must be important in some way.
Deadline: Midday May 9th, 2016 Word count: under 5000 Entry fee: $5 per story payable at the time of entry. (Either through the shop or by internet banking.) You may enter as many times as you like, the fee is payable per story. Who can enter: Anyone as long as you are kiwi by birth or by choice. Open to all age groups.
Submission is either electronic (via email) or hard copy. If you opt for hard copy please ensure there are four copies of your story.
Addresses for submission: firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘The Scarf’ in the subject line and containing your story as an attachment. We accept .doc, .docx, and open office formatted files. If you use a Mac please export your file as a Word document and then send it to us.
Or drop your entry into the shop: 2/893 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt (across the road from Upper Hutt railway station.) Printed and delivered entries are non-returnable, please keep a copy!

Please be aware the postal service is 3 days a week now and SLOW. If you post your story keep a copy. No posted material will be returned. We would prefer stories to be emailed.
IMPORTANT: Include a title page, which contains the title of your story, your name, contact details, and word count.
All printed stories should be on A4 paper, one sided and 1.5 or 2 for line spacing and in a clear readable font (Times New Roman 12 point for example). Please include page numbers, and the title on each page – either in a header or footer. No name to appear on the story itself.
Judging: by a panel comprised of Writer’s Plot Readers Read staff and two guest judges (yet to be determined). Prizes: First prize is an original queen sized quilt designed and pieced by Phyl Illes. (First Prize value is over $200.00 and not redeemable for cash.) Second prize: Writer’s Plot Gift Voucher (value to be determined but not less than $20.00 not redeemable for cash). Third Prize: Signed copy of Array by Cat Connor (not redeemable for cash)
Judges decision is final and winners announced on June 6th, 2016 on our Facebook page. The winners will also be notified by email.
Submitted work: should not have been previously published, accepted for publication or submitted for publication either in printed or electronic form. A condition of entry is that all entries be available for future publication or promotional purposes (if selected), at no cost to the organisers. Copyright remains with the author.
This competition is to honour the memory of Phyl Illes – quilter, artist, former Upper Hutt business woman and Soroptimist, mother, wife, friend, and writer – whose first crime short story was called The Scarf.
