Something rather fabulous...

Some of you know I have been working on the next book, which is terrorbyte. It follows killerbyte (as it would) and is now with my publisher... and I have my fingers crossed that they love it too.

Before I sent the ms, Sara J Henry did a fabulous copyedit and suggested a few changes within the story which I gobbled up with fervor. (Goodness almost had a Hannibal Lecter moment then - where's the Chianti?)

I also sent a copy to Lee Pletzers. he has two books coming out later this year, one of which I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. I also wondered why his lovely wife seemed so familiar when I met her (at the killerbyte release party and then spent an evening with at the Cornevil maze)- you'll have to read 'The Last Church' when it's released. Especially if you're a horror fan.

Yes I am going somewhere with this ramble. The destination is here, Lee Pletzers review site. Lee read, enjoyed and posted an advance review of terrorbyte. Which is truly wonderful, and I know the last few weeks for him have not been easy.

Crikey I jammed a lot of links into today's blog!

Why I love headphones...

When it comes to drowning out 'Roary the racing car', nothing works as well as headphones. They're pretty good at drowning out Hi-5 too. I have to crank the volume up for that tho. (Lost Highway is currently playing in my ears... so much better than the annoying bouncy Australians gallivanting across the television.)

But what is REALLY annoying - the phone ringing! Apparently I can still hear it and feel compelled to answer it. God knows why!

I do not enjoy early afternoon phone calls. It's when I'm trying to get things finished before picking the Squealer up from school.

I have discovered that working once she is home is rather ridiculous. Depending on how her day went, of course. But mostly - it's a waste of time and my precious nerves to try thinking/working with the Squealer around these days.
At the moment she's rather fragile -due to the stupidity/selfishness of some people.
She's not been eating at school, now her teacher checks her lunch box, three times during the day. This is the latest way she expresses her inability to cope with the stupidity going on around us all at the moment. I'm very tired of the selfish and vindictive bullshit that has had such a detrimental effect on her mental and physical well being.
This is just as difficult to deal with as her refusing medication - but more dangerous. She weighs a mere 2kg more than her 3 yr old sister. Not good for a ten yr old!!

It is time we got the fuck out of dodge. (I thought I'd done that once already! How is it Dodge keeps following me? Peculiar ain't it? )

As for writing: Terrorbyte could be done. Imagine that?

The very lovely Sara J. Henry read and copyedited for me this week. She really rocks!

You MUST go by Sara's blog and have a read. She got THE call!!! I swear I was just as excited as her. There was squealing and giggling. Having read her manuscript recently, I am not surprised at all! What a story! What a journey! I loved every second.
I can't wait until she's obsessing over her rankings. :)

I'm just waiting to hear from Lee Pletzers, in case there is something Sara and I missed... because shit happens! I'm hoping, not!

This afternoon I shall create a pdf (to prevent me tweaking it) and read tonight - just read. While trying to pretend I don't know the story and that I've never met these people before. (Might be a hard ask, lol)

I think I better get moving. There's a chicken that needs stuffing... (I hate doing that) and veges that require peeling (not fussed on that either).

Y'all take care.

killerbyte let's see if we can put killerbyte back at at least number 7!

This dropping to 8, is not working for me. Going to need to do way better than that to go to Caleb's wedding in the UK. :-)

Oh, turns out (after a reshuffle, few new chapters, etc etc) the chapter titles for terrorbyte are entirely Bon Jovi.

Bet I can't pull that off again. :-)

Eight days

killerbyte has now done eight days at number seven... time to move on up!! :)

I spent all weekend working on Terrorbyte. Literally all weekend, I did nothing else. By last night the manuscript was driving me crazy.

It's now safely in the hands of two readers. One being the talented Lee Pletzers, the other the exceptional Sara J Henry.
To say I am a tad nervous is quite the understatement. The last time this was read was the actual first draft and it was late last year. (Thank you Graeme Johns!) He read it moments before the commissioning editor at Penguin NZ read it. Remember when Penguin NZ liked me, much? and then it all fell over cos I'm not kiwi enough? - let me just say NUMBER SEVEN on an international list! In fact, only kiwi in TOP TEN. Not only that, but only debut author in TOP TEN.

So a weekend of tweaking the story and tying up loose ends (I hope). It was kinda fun. Right up until I made myself cry. Dah!

Monday started slowly. Chris is sick. I was tired from spending all weekend doing what we've already discussed... and sort of lost really. Can't be tweaking the ms until I hear back from Lee and Sara.

So what to do?

well... I polished the house, it gleams and smells slightly lemony.

Then I opened the Gnominator! Yes that's right... spurred on by Dennis, Elvis and Tony.

I went to work fiddling with the manuscript, and have mostly decided it's time I did something with it. It is an entirely kiwi set/kiwi book. With an explosion or two and some rather interesting characters. (Donald is my favorite - you'll see)

I haven't yet decided exactly what I'm doing with the Gnominator. Possibly a title change. No doubt the exact one will leap at me shortly. Then we might start making noises about finding a kiwi publisher... I don't see an international market for this particular story. Maybe Aussie because so many kiwi's are there! Or maybe I'll shove it back in the drawer.
I dunno.

I like the story - it's odd. Very odd, as throughout the story is another story being read to one of the characters. As I said odd.

So what were you all up to this weekend?

I'd ask for a show of hands regarding the killerbyte competition - but don't worry I won't. Saves everyone going... 'ohh darn, never quite got around to that!'

In the immortal words of Breezy, "Never mind."

Competition ends tomorrow.

Yep that's right: Tomorrow is the 25th. And you know what that means , don't you?

Here's a link to the competition info

Dennis, Tony, and Elvis await your entries with glee (if indeed gnomes do glee) by the look of Dennis, he probably does P, no doubt supplied by Tony. Moving right along.

It's Sunday morning, it's rather chilly and I really need to get organized today and do more than sit here editing, writing, and enjoying myself. It truly sucks when life interferes with work. (Yes that's right, given half a chance I prefer to work than do most things)

We have guests coming for dinner. Meanwhile this afternoon is Rosanne's garage warming and hubby is ill. Yes, he is! He has some flu/cold thing which apparently is quite bad. Yet he had his flu shot.
I had that annoying clown flu for nearly three weeks (don't know that there is a flu vaccine for clown flu!) which really was just annoying... let that be a lesson to you all, don't let clowns touch your face!! (especially ones from It, and killer clowns from outer space)

I do believe some housework will need doing.

Coffee certainly needs consuming this morning. I shall get right on that.

Oh clue?

1a. The son of Shakespeare.

5. Wendys

8 Roy Matheson.

y'all have a great day.

Everyone say hey to Dennis

The day finally came, Spike dropped Elvis and Tony's new friend off this afternoon... He is a special present from the Gortex Stranger.

I have named him Dennis (After the BTK strangler)

Ya gotta admit the look on his face is similar. - Creepy huh?

So here he is... with Tony and Elvis, who apparently decided there was no room for Dennis on top of the cd case - after they met him. Nice guys! Real nice.

It's Saturday - I'm editing.
It's also freezing, raining, blowing a gale, oh and we have sleet at times.

I've managed to bake and also make cheesecake.

killerbyte is still at number seven!!! Very exciting!

The Prime minister is following me on twitter... that is so cool, I don't know where to start.

And I had a wonderful at the book club meeting the other night, was a blast being the guest speaker. Who'd have thought anyone would want to hear what I have to say about writing? And I got asked for my autograph! (Signed everyone's cards)

Apparently signing autographs makes me famous according to scariest-of-all-daughters and son-the-younger.
LOL

plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead

It's true there will be, between haunting and freaking the fuck outta people - there will be time to sleep when I'm dead. Which is great because I seem to be running out of sleep time here.

I know I haven't been writing many blog, and Chrissy tells me any from Ellie don't count - well she's a fine one to talk about the lack of blogs! I'm seeing pots and kettles all over the place.

So anyway - tonight I go talk to a book club... which I spelled as book cub on Facebook, and it was noticed.

Am trying to keep an eye on the time this morning and keep forgetting what I need to be doing and when I need to leave! I blame nightmares and the whole giving a talk thing.
Before I do that though I need to go do something else, something that should mean I can open my blog/myspace page up again without any of this bullshit I've had to endure of late from those who like to make things up and cause trouble.

Have just tossed a bunch of stuff into the crock pot. Am hoping that by tonight it will produce a hearty beef stew thing. That would be handy and take some pressure off come dinner time, and me getting ready to go out and panicking all over the place.

Trusty neighbor, the very sensible Mac-alike-Kane, assures me it will go well and I will know exactly what to say. Can't not believe him really, he has this way of being right A LOT. Little bit of blind faith in myself might not hurt.

Over the last few weeks I have been slowly compiling a memory book - I can't go as far as to say scrap book, as they turn my gut. This book has all manner of things related to killerbyte. From my contract to the latest pics of the mobipocket list and where I am on it.
Photo's from the launch bbq, comments people made, and that kind of thing too.
Its kinda fun to add too.

Last night I wrote until midnight, working on a new scene inside Terrorbyte, I have almost finished the scene. Just a few kids to rescue (or not) to go. A couple of other things that bug me need tidying up and some more info on weapons grade chlorine needs adding, and then, maybe... I can hand it off to a reader or two. Well one in particular who I KNOW will find anything I've screwed up.
Then I'll feel okay about launching it toward my publishers desk for her opinion.

Of course I'd sooner be revising and writing now, not filling in time while waiting to head off into the freezing freaking cold!!

Am hoping the mail arrives before I leave... am expecting 'Keep the Faith' to be here this morning. woo hoo!!! I managed to lose my copy and had to get a new one, desperately!!

Seems Terrorbyte lends itself to Keep the Faith, with a good mix of 100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans can't be wrong and a little New Jersey.

Go with it - I've had too!

Play list for Terrorbyte is going to be almost exclusively Bon Jovi. Way less eclectic than killerbyte.

Tony and Elvis get their new playmate tomorrow. We've had to reschedule the drop off of the as-yet-unnamed gnome. Need to get batteries for Tony, he's flattened his! I can't say its a bad thing not having him glow creepily at me from beside my screen... but Elvis has new batteries and it feels like favoritism. I can't be tolerating that.

I had the pure joy of reading for Sara the other day. The tissue box was damn near empty by the time I finished reading! I laughed, I cried, I despised, I adored, and at the end was left feeling elated for having been on the journey.

Right that's about it for now. Wish me luck!

I thought it was about time Ellie came back for a chat

A wee while ago Ellie introduced herself over here, today she's back.

Hello my name is Ellie Conway, and I am addicted to the internet...

Or, hello my name is Special Agent Gabrielle Conway and I am addicted to the internet.

Choose which ever one you like... just don't call me Gabrielle. (SA, agent, Ellie, hey you, are all acceptable forms of address and I will on occasion answer to ma'am)

There are things about me that make me kinda odd, or maybe just give me an edge... yeah that's it, I'm edgy. Way better than being odd.

I may or may not share those things with you. Some of you will already know a fair amount about me from killerbyte.

What I really wanted to do was share with you the story of how I met Mac. But we'll see...

For now how about I tell you a few things about me and Mac and see how that goes...

Mac and me.

Recently I was asked about Mac, a lot about him, as it happens by someone who is interested in who he is and our relationship and Killerbyte.
What follows happened between nine and ten pm on August 29th. ha ha ha

This is how it went...

When and where did you meet?

In a chat room one Saturday night, a few years a go now. Is that sad or what?
It was a poetry chat room - we both wrote/write poetry. Mac's is infinitely superior to mine. We used poetry to cope with the darkness of humanity and hide from our respective realities.

How close were you before you met in person?

Exceptionally. We developed this weird sixth sense regarding one another - we sensed moods etc from long distances. I kinda liked him (I think he knew) and couldn't imagine going longer than a few days without him there chatting to me in messenger.
That led me to putting off our meeting in person, I was leary and more than a little scared that reality wouldn't measure up. It was two years of long conversations before we met...

And?

What can I say, I was wrong! We met by accident in a coffee shop in Richmond,VA. Both a fair way from home, and it was as if we'd known each other for several lives. There was zero awkwardness and the meeting cemented what we already knew and felt.

Accident?

I'm not convinced it was an accident but have yet to extract the truth from my father. A few things conspired that day and led to me meeting Mac and I don't believe for one second any of them were accidental.

How long was it before you were an official couple?

Quite some time. We didn't date any other people, but we weren't dating either! We saw a lot of each other, well as much as was possible. We lived quite a distance from each other (a good three hour drive) and plus my job involves a bit of traveling.

Sex?

Really, I doubt that that's anyone's business but ours.

Describe his personality.

He's caring, considerate, stands his ground (has been known to growl when I push him hard) can get plenty angry at himself - mostly. He has a MacGyver approach to solving problems and I've never known him to think inside the square!
He's mentally strong and Mensa smart. Not arrogant, can be very sure of himself and with equal measure - doubt himself and his ability. Let me just add, he ain't perfect - neither of us are, but we work - we got it right.

What was it you fell for in Mac?

Initially the way he wrote - then the way he thought - then his smile - then his laugh... and eventually (as the relationship progressed to allow more knowledge) him, the whole person... the way he ran his hands through his hair and they way he keeps his head when those around us are losing theirs...

Do you believe in soul mates?

I don't know, maybe. I believe in souls and I believe we meet the same souls we once knew over and over again. We draw the same energy to us. but I'm not sure about the much used 'soul mate' tag.

Can you share one moment of your lives with me?

Didn't I just do that?

Something personal?

I carry a Glock 17. Mac prefers a .357 magnum.

That's not what I meant.

If you want to know our secrets you'll have to read Killerbyte, lol. Yeah I know that's not fair but life isn't fair.

We both have a weakness for tequila....

My obsessive weekend... lol

Okay so it was pointed out to me by Sara J. Henry that I am obsessing over killerbyte ranking.

She's correct I am!

I can't help myself... I check where I am on the top ten every day! At the moment I'm playing footsie with Elizabeth George, James Rollins seems to have dropped off or moved up or something - either way, it's Elizabeth and I who are vying for tenth.

I shall endeavor to not look or mention it for at least twenty-four hours from now... or maybe from this morning (which wouldn't make it quite so long, LOL).

But I can assure you all, I am not buying my own book to boost my ranking! - there is no way I could afford to do that, even if I had an inkling to do so, which I don't!

As for the rest of the weekend - well that was pretty much it really... lol.

No it wasn't.

Well maybe.

Oh yeah, I, ummm, I'm sure I did something other than obsess over sales or lack of. Excuse me while I dredge up the memory of the weekend just past.

It's here somewhere, I know it is!

Yes, that's right... I got printer paper and a directors notebook for mothers day. I cooked dinner.
Went to bed early both days in the weekend, cos it was cold and I wanted to read 'The bodies left behind' by Jeffrey Deaver. Which I finished, and loved. As I would really. He writes a fabulously twisted story.

I also managed a migraine and a filthy temper on Saturday. No doubt the family enjoyed that. NOT.

Have looked everywhere to find a copy of Road House. It's been mostly unsuccessful. There is one of Trademe. But I was outbid on Friday, and as it doesn't close until tomorrow I shan't bid until then!

I have a desperate need to hear Bon Jovi's Lost Highway - but Breezy is watching something on the TV. I don't want to disturb her while she's actually watching something quietly.
May have to resort to headphones!

All in all, I'm pretty much obsessing over sales and not doing much else, except marketing and so forth.

I expect to be able to write at some stage this week, or at least revise... but we'll see. It's just not happening at the moment. Either external influences causing too much shit for me to be able to switch off and work or too much other stuff to do.

I need another me, I've needed one for awhile. Someone who can handle bulletins, emails, facebook, twitter, Myspace, Ellie, Mac, and the obsessing for me! LOL
As if that'll happen, I can't even get the simple things done unless I do them myself - (that's not true, not totally all by myself, my publisher is working very hard too! I heart her) - it feels like other stuff that I want done or would like done, gets ignored by those closest to me. (Way to go team!)

right back to my obsessing... I mean...work?

Nope not work, and not obsessing... I have the opportunity to read a book by a friend from Backspace, I just started it before heading off to school to collect the squealer... yup we were nearly late! Tara if you're reading this. You freaking rock! Talk about an opening chapter that grabs and won't let go!

competition time!!!

Good morning all,

Hope you're all ready for a challenge... and the possibility of winning a killerbyte tote bag. 100% cotton - tie-dyed - handmade - although the fabulous environmentally friendly aspect of the bag will probably be outweighed by the posting!! But the thought was there.

There will also be fridge magnets and a keyring each for the winners.

The competition will run from today May 4th until May 25th. (But don't leave it too late and you probably need to have read the book! lol)

It is open to everyone.

Death by Chlorine gas

As I am being harrassed again - by the same person - again. I need to make my blog on MySpace friends only, and cannot for the life of me remember how to do that!

Could someone tell me where to find the appropriate box to check, please!

Not sure if the person has found my other blogs yet - guess time will tell.

I am so over this shit, you have no idea!!!

And as for taking things out of context from my blog and trying to say they're about him... I don't fucn think so. Can y'all say defamation?

1. I have far more interesting things going on in my life, and have no reason or need to say/do anything negative toward anyone else. (Unless of course you include the killers in my books... and then it's open season and rightly so)
2. Some advice for you all in blog land... Don't fall into the age old trap of believing your own bullshit -cos it leads nowhere fast and makes you look like an idiot.
3. Did everyone cop a look at the mobipocket best of list? Did ya see who was sitting in the list with the BIG boys?
4. Just in case you didn't... here is the link go look at the right hand side of the page...

mobipocket

Now back to work... no time for any more interruptions today. Have Terrorbyte to polish. (No doubt someone somewhere will take offense or see something that isn't there and cause a stink about it... such is life.)

Now for the fun bit...
I came up with a truly delightful way of dealing with someone in Terrorbyte - was there all along but I didn't really see it till today. Death by Chlorine gas. And the beauty is - I'd already put in all the ground work... I love it when plans unexpectedly come together. So that explains how why he was dead when it didn't look as though the car crash killed him, and why the car and him stunk of chlorine. - it's quite clever ya know and I'm not giving away the delivery system... you'll just have to wait for the book. :)
